MISSION: The Center supports research and scholarly activity in the Communication Department, including basic research, policy analysis, system design and scholarly exchange.
Located on the first floor of the Fargo Complex, the Communication Science Center is one of UB’s newest hubs for research and discovery. Founded in 2005, the CSC is led by Dr. Mark Frank and focuses on using quantitative research methods to understand emotions and nonverbal behavior.
Our goal: generate knowledge that improves the quality of communication across fields like law, marketing, health care and law enforcement.
Our research is practical, relevant and rooted in real-world challenges. The CSC is a national leader in studying how people detect deception—using nonverbal and physiological cues. Much of our work has direct applications, especially in partnership with law enforcement, airports and customs agencies.
For over 20 years, Dr. Frank and the CSC team have pushed the boundaries of deception and nonverbal communication research, helping to replace outdated law enforcement techniques with science-based practices.
The CSC collaborates with partners around the world to help law enforcement agencies improve their methods and outcomes through the power of science.
