The NAVIGATE Project

A resource for navigating workplace harassment in STEM disciplines

The NAVIGATE Project, funded by the National Science Foundation from 2017-2022, was created to provide a resource of free and publicly available training materials that help STEM graduate students:

  • Overcome barriers to advance in STEM careers nationwide
  • Equip the skills needed to navigate bias, inequity or discrimination in the workforce
  • Apply a case study approach proven to develop analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Address a national priority to grow and diversify the STEM workforce

UB STEMinism

WISC members.

UB STEMinism is a gender-inclusive group that aims to provide a safe and supportive space for women of color in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields to address concerns related to identity, psychosocial stressors, school-work-life balance and other factors, that may impact their academic functioning in undesirable ways.

Created in conjunction with , the STEMinism group features:

  • A support network for students who share similar goals, objectives, struggles and successes
  • Psychoeducation, peer-support/student led discussion groups
  • A place to facilitate healthier interactions and address some psychosocial stressors
  • A place to identify barriers to success, personal or academic, and develop strategies that move students forward
  • A place to obtain information for on-campus/community referrals related to mental health concerns that will not addressed by/in group

STEMinism is scheduled on a bi-weekly basis throughout the semester and in addition to the psychoeducation and peer support, provides opportunities for participants to engage in social activities, professional development, mentoring workshops, seminars and other activities that connect students of color in STEM.

Student Clubs and Organizations for Women

AWM encourages women and girls to have active careers in the mathematical sciences, and promoting equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences.

  • The Society of Women Engineers encourages women to achieve their full career potential as engineers and leaders by expanding the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and by demonstrating the value of diversity.
  • Phi Sigma Rho is a social sorority exclusively for women in engineering. Phi Sigma Rho sisters strive for academic and professional excellence but recognize that developing lasting bonds of friendship and support with other women in engineering is essential to our success.
  • The Society of Women Engineers encourages women to achieve their full career potential as engineers and leaders by expanding the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and by demonstrating the value of diversity.
  • Previously known as UB Scientista, UB DivTech promotes diversity in technology by trying to provide equal access to opportunities such as internships, scholarships, hackathons and conferences.
  • UB STEMinism is a group open to participation by any student that aims to provide peer support and opportunities for engagement in social activities, professional development, mentoring workshops, seminars and other activities that connect students.
  • Short description of the student club. This should only be one to two sentences at the most.

Internal

  •  – Full tuition scholarship for a woman seeking an undergraduate degree in science, engineering, or math, funded by Cards Against Humanity.
  •  – A unique opportunity for women to spend a year immersed in teaching and research at American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
  •  – A global community of scholars designed to provide a forum to share resources, support other women in tech and collaborate on projects to make continued impact.
  •  – For students interested in pursuing a career in biological research, science education, environmental science, or biotechnology.
  •  – A summer fellowship program, which seeks to place a diverse group of master’s and doctoral students from underrepresented groups in the environmental field.
  •  – Listing of internships, fellowships and scholarships available through NASA.
  • - Since 1888, AAUW has been one of the largest funders of women’s graduate education, investing in women who go on to change the world.
  • - The Buffalo Branch of AAUW offers scholarships plus interest-free loans and grants, providing additional financial support to college students in the Western New York area.
