UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO: REPORTER for February 27,
1997

SEAS Dean
Mark Karwan

The Faculty Senate has begun what likely will be an extensive process of reviewing Provost Thomas Headrick's report on academic planning at UB.

In the second-floor laboratory of a suburban corporate park, a 5-foot, 140-pound robot is being commanded in plain written English to "get the red ball." Hidden wheels propel it forward as it sets out across the room, which looks like an obstacle course. The cylindrical robot carefully navigates its way amid a clutter of desks and computers. Barely seconds later, it has cornered the red ball like a soccer player.
