Montgomery “Monty” Hill, Tuscarora Beaver Clan and assistant professor in the Department of Indigenous Studies, died April 11. He was 35.
Hill was a scholar and the 2025 recipient of the Mellon Foundation’s Citizen Scholar’s Career Enhancement Fellowship for Junior Faculty. In 2020, he was part of the inaugural cohort of . He had a deep commitment to the Tuscarora Nation, language revitalization and broadening the scope of Indigenous studies. His love of language and Haudenosaunee culture brought joy to all around him.
Hill was committed to thinking through the use of technology, as well as methods of teaching in his scholarship and community work. He was an alumnus of the College of Arts and Sciences, earning his PhD in linguistics in 2020 for his dissertation, “Tuscarora Morphology and Language Revitalization."
The Department of Indigenous Studies is planning a gathering tentatively scheduled for May 15. Colleagues and friends are encouraged to share a memory or remembrance on the memory board in the Department of Indigenous Studies’ community space on the sixth floor of Clemens Hall.
